What is a 10 cent worth?

What is a 10 cent worth? I learned a valuable lesson to appreciate more of little things in life. Reason being, it can be so worthy that it can mean the world. I went to a night market after school to buy ‘kuih bulan’ (a kind of pancake with sweeten peanuts as its filling) because my dad asked me to. This market was my favourite place to go to break the day routine. Sort of a therapeutic effect it gave me. I went to one of the kuih bulan stalls and placed my order. Just when I took out and opened my wallet to pay, I heard sound of a coin falling and I quickly looked down to see if it was mine. Suddenly, I saw it rolled and stopped not far from where I was standing. Thinking it was just a 10 cent, I quickly considered it to be charity for whoever might find it. I noticed there was a guy who saw the fateful coin too as he was passing by behind me. A guy in his early 20`s wearing black t-shirt and white knee length short. I was sure he must have realized the 10 cent was mine. Judging from his appearance, I thought he was a typical ignorant kid nowadays who spent time loitering with other latchkey kids. I said to myself, “hmm, let’s see if he picked up that 10 cent”. I was excited that he would definitely fail this honesty test. I presupposed that he took the 10 cent and he felt happy for it. I imagined myself in a thriller movie scene when there was deafening thunder on a stormy night. Flashes of lightning across the sky created flickering shadow of a scientist (that’s me) standing in front of a big glass window and he was sinisterly laughing. I was about to celebrate my triumph of this pseudo psychological test when all of a sudden, there was a voice saying, “I believe this is yours”. I was stricken by a gesture of the same guy handing me that 10 cent. I was hesitant to say thank you because I was dumbfounded and at the same time, I was succumbed into a pang of guilt for having a bad thought on him. Nonetheless, I put a grateful face and smiled away. I drove home that night thinking and asking myself what was a 10 cent worth? If I had RM999 999. 90, a 10 cent would make me a millionaire. Also, I have learned there were people with hearts of gold out there. I would not be able to see them if I clouded my mind’s eye with hasty generalization. Thank you for reading. (I almost lost my 10 cent in the making of the photograph swept by wave coming ashore)
